3 Maryland Marriage License Filing Tips

Maryland Marriage License Tips

Planning to get married in Maryland? Understanding the marriage license filing process BEFORE you apply will save you time and stress! Follow our three top tips for filing for a marriage license in Maryland below.

Filing Tip 1: Know Your Fiance’s Facts

Maryland is one of the few states that does not require both people getting married to file for their marriage license in-person. This is great news, because both of you don’t have to take a vacation day to file. The person that does go to the County Clerk’s office needs to know their future spouse’s social security number, birthdate, and place of birth. You will also need to bring a government-issued photo ID for both of you to meet the filing requirements of the office.

Filing Tip 2: Know Your County’s Fee Requirements

Every county in Maryland has a different marriage license fee and accepts different payment methods. For example, you can use any credit card except an American Express to pay the $55 marriage license filing fee in Montgomery county, but Howard County only accepts cash for their $50 fee. Take the time to call the office to verify the fee and payment methods before you head over!

Filing Tip 3: Know Your Timeline

Maryland marriage licenses are valid for six months after they are issued. This means you can plan ahead and file for your license months ahead of your wedding. We suggest filing 2 months in advance.
